HC Deb 12 July 1948 vol 453 c824
11. Lieut. - Colonel Sir Cuthbert Headlam

asked the Minister of Food whether he will state the approximate amount of soap supplied to the general public, as compared with the amount supplied to hospitals and institutions and other users on permit.

Dr. Summerskill

About 213,000 tons per annum (in terms of hard soap) goes to the general public, and about 95,000 tons per annum to non-domestic users against permits.

Sir C. Headlam

Will the Parliamentary Secretary tell me why permit holders in the case of hospitals and institutions are not allowed to change their suppliers in the same way as private consumers?

Dr. Summerskill

That is another question, and perhaps the right hon. and gallant Member will put it down.
