HC Deb 08 July 1948 vol 453 c579
54. Lieut.-Commander Clark Hutchison

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power if he will increase the standard ration of petrol allocated to motor cycles of over 250 c.c. capacity on a sliding scale as is done in the case of the more powerful motor cars.

Mr. Robens

No, Sir; in general, motor cyclists are able to travel further on their standard ration than the owners of motor cars, and this advantage extends to the owners of high power motor cycles who are, on the present standard ration, able to cover a greater mileage than the owners of high power cars.

Lieut.-Commander Hutchison

Does not the Parliamentary Secretary think there should be the same treatment of grading allocations in the case of both motor cycles and motor cars.

Mr. Robens

There is grading into two groups—under 250 c.c and 250 c.c and over—which is a reasonable division of the cubic capacity of motor cycles.

Lieut.-Commander Hutchison

Are there not four grades in the case of motor cars?

Mr. Robens

Yes, but, of course, there is a greater variety of horse power in the case of motor cars.
