HC Deb 08 July 1948 vol 453 cc561-2
28. Mr. Keeling

asked the Minister of Education which local education committees in Middlesex have expressed a wish either for or against the setting up of comprehensive schools in their areas.

Mr. Tomlinson

I understand that when the Middlesex local education authority discussed with the divisional executives the proposal to include comprehensive schools in the Development Plan two of them, Enfield and Twickenham, formally opposed the proposal. Enfield have since lodged an objection with me. Hayes and Harlington have written to me asking for a comprehensive school to be established there.

Mr. Keeling

As the Minister said the other day that comprehensive schools would be set up in two Middlesex areas, may we take it that the experiment will be tried in two places only and in no others?

Mr. Tomlinson

I could not say "In no others," because approval has since been given to a third which has been asked for.

Mr. Keeling

Where is that?

Mr. Tomlinson

Hayes.
