HC Deb 05 July 1948 vol 453 c23
45. Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

asked the Prime Minister whether it is his intention to introduce legislation to effect the changes in the Royal Title forecast in the recent proclamation.

The Prime Minister (Mr. Attlee)

No further legislation is necessary.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

In considering that answer, has the Prime Minister borne in mind the statement in the second paragraph of the Preamble to the Statute of Westminster that the assent of this House, as of the Dominion Parliaments, will in future be required for any change in the Royal Title; and if that assent is not to be given by way of legislation, is it proposed that it shall be given by way of Motion?

The Prime Minister

The hon. Member has overlooked Section 7 (2) of the Independence Act, 1947, in which that assent was given.
