HC Deb 28 January 1948 vol 446 c1012
60. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Minister of Food whether it is his intention to import any of the 1,000,000 tons of rice which Burma has available for export during the present year.

Dr. Summerskill

An allocation of 24,500 tons of rice has recently been recommended for the United Kingdom by the International Emergency Food Council, who have indicated Burma as the source of supply for 19,000 tons of this quantity. Some time must elapse, however, before this rice can be made available for distribution in the United Kingdom.
