HC Deb 22 January 1948 vol 446 c379
51. Mr. Martin Lindsay

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will consider the restoration of the Purchase Tax on new motor cars bought during 1947 where purchasers have discontinued licensing them owing to the abolition of the basic petrol ration.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

No, Sir.

Mr. Lindsay

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that a considerable number of people of only moderate means now have the feeling that they have been fraudulently treated by the Government, since the Government have collected Purchase Tax on their cars and now refuse them permission to sell them?

Mr. Glenvil Hall

Yes, but they can, if they so desire, sell the cars that they have on their hands; and I understand that the British Motor Car Manufacturers' Association will be only too willing to give them permission to resell, if they are bound by any agreement not to sell them within 12 months.
