HC Deb 21 January 1948 vol 446 cc205-6
51. Squadron Leader Fleming

asked the Minister of Food how many tons of bananas were landed at United Kingdom ports in the years 1946 and 1947, respectively.

Dr. Summerskill

One hundred and one thousand, five hundred and fifty tons in 1946, and 103,763 tons in 1947.

Squadron-Leader Fleming

Can the Minister assure us that there will be some plan to increase the supply of bananas this year in order to give the housewife a chance to live less austerely?

Dr. Summerskill

We are trying to do that, and we hope that about 160,000 tons will be imported next year.

Sir R. Ross

Will the Minister consider allowing grown-up people one banana a year, as many of them have not had a banana in 10 years?

Dr. Summerskill

Yes, certainly, an expectant mother can have one.
