HC Deb 26 February 1948 vol 447 cc2104-5
29. Mr. Bramall

asked the President of the Board of Trade what steps are being taken to reduce the unfavourable balance of trade with Spain and how this unfavourable balance is liquidated.

Mr. H. Wilson

Figures of visible trade between Spain and the United Kingdom in 1947 show a balance in Spain's favour, but when all payments are taken into account, including payments between Spain and the rest of the sterling area, the balance in favour of Spain is small and the Government do not feel that any special measures are called for.

Mr. Bramall

Does my right hon. Friend consider that it is in line with Government policy of saving currency from those countries with whom we have an unfavourable balance, to import considerable quantities of wine from Spain?
