HC Deb 26 February 1948 vol 447 cc2113-4
73. Mr. Janner

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power when he intends installing pithead baths in the Desford Colliery; and why work has not yet commenced on them despite his statement that the contract would probably be placed towards the end of 1947.

Mr. Gaitskell

I am informed that the Miners' Welfare Commission now hope to place the contract before next August. The final planning of the scheme had to be deferred pending a decision about the number of workmen for whom facilities should be provided.

Mr. Janner

Is my right hon. Friend aware that on 16th May, 1947, he informed the hon. Member for West Leicester that the Desford Colliery was included in the pithead baths building programme and that the contract for the building of the baths would probably be placed towards the end of the year; further, is he aware that the only bath installed appears to be a bath for the manager, and will he say what he proposes to do to ensure the speedy provision of baths for the men, many of whom have to travel long distances to their homes in a most undesirable state?

Mr. Gaitskell

I am aware of all those facts, but I have also explained that it is hoped to place the contract towards the end of August.
