HC Deb 26 February 1948 vol 447 c2093
7. Mr. Watkins

asked the Minister of Education, in view of the prohibition of any school fees in maintained schools under the Education Act of 1944, has he approved of the action of the Breconshire Education Authority in asking pupils who enter their maintained grammar schools to pay a sum of five shilling on entry.

Mr. Tomlinson

The answer is in the negative. I understand that the payments referred to by my hon. Friend arise under School Life Agreements. Agreements of this kind do not require my approval, but I think that the arrangements in Breconshire are open to objection, and I am communicating with the local education authority in the matter.
