HC Deb 26 February 1948 vol 447 cc2119-20
62. Mr. Raikes

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power what compensation it is proposed to pay Wigan Corporation on the transfer of their gas undertaking under nationalisation for assets of the approximate capital value of £600,000.

Mr. Gaitskell

I would refer the hon. Member to the provisions of the Gas Bill, the principle of which was discussed and approved by this House on the Second Reading on 11th February.

Mr. Raikes

Arising out of the right hon. Gentleman's answer, if it means anything, does it mean that outstanding loans will be taken into account, and that the ratepayers of Wigan will be robbed of £500,000?

Mr. Gaitskell

If the Wigan Corporation were to be compensated in the way implied by the hon. Member, the consumers of gas in the Wigan and Lancashire areas would have to pay far more for their gas.
