HC Deb 12 February 1948 vol 447 cc573-4
55. Mr. Janner

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that under the present method of call up army training is never started for young men immediately they leave school or college and there is no guarantee as to the precise dates when the recruit can return to civilian life; and whether in view of the uncertainty which this position creates among those wishing to go to a University arrangements can be made for all those young men who intend to go to universities to be called up at the end of July for a firm period of one year.

Mr. Isaacs

I appreciate the difficulty to which my hon. Friend draws attention, and I hope that it may be possible to meet it entirely next year when the period of national service becomes 12 months. This year it will not be possible to meet it entirely, but we shall do the best we can.

Mr. Janner

Is my right hon. Friend aware that his answer will give considerable satisfaction to a large number of people throughout the country?
