HC Deb 12 February 1948 vol 447 cc555-6
26. Mr. Piratin

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department the number of robberies during each of the last six months in the Borough of Ealing; and what steps he is taking to provide protection for the people.

Mr. Ede

During the six months ended 31st December last, there were four offences of robbery and assaults with intent to rob in the Borough of Ealing—one each in August, September, November and December. This area receives an equitable share of the resources available to the Metropolitan police force.

Mr. Piratin

Is the Home Secretary aware that there is a feeling among the decent citizens of Ealing that they are not being sufficiently protected by the police, and will he not use some of those police officers whom he provides for Sir Oswald Mosley, to protect decent, law abiding citizens?

Mr. James Hudson

Before replying to that question, will my right hon. Friend say whether the figures for Mile End are any worse than those for Ealing?

Mr. Ede

I do not wish to draw any comparisons.

Mr. Medlicott

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this is one of the boroughs which are plunged into complete darkness at midnight, and that this is understood to be due to the refusal of the local police to sponsor the lighting of the public lamps after midnight? Will he have the matter looked into, as it causes a great deal of local feeling?

Mr. Ede

The figures which I gave indicate that there is no cause for criticism of the police in this area.

Wing-Commander Hulbert

How many Communists are there in the Borough of Ealing?
