HC Deb 11 February 1948 vol 447 c353
11. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty what are his intentions with regard to Heathfield airfield.

Mr. W. Edwards

Heathfield airfield, which is the Royal Naval Air Station, Ayr, is required permanently by the Navy as a war emergency station. It is at present being kept on a care and maintenance basis.

Mr. Hughes

Is the Minister aware that Ayr Town Council, the County Council of Ayrshire and the Scottish Department of Health have made representations against this policy, and that the housing conditions in this area are about the worst in the country? Will he reconsider the matter?

Mr. Edwards

I am quite aware that certain representations have been made, but I would invite my hon. Friend to realise that the Navy must have some air stations in this country, and something must be done in Scotland as well.

Mr. Hughes

In view of the unsatisfactory nature of the reply, I beg to give notice that I shall raise the matter on the Motion for the Adjournment.
