HC Deb 10 February 1948 vol 447 c215
54. Mr. William Shepherd

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the extent of capital movements to South Africa from the United Kingdom during the year 1947.

Sir S. Cripps

Though they were considerable, it is as yet too soon to hazard an estimate.

Mr. Shepherd

Can the Chancellor of the Exchequer say whether any arrangements exist between the Government of South Africa and this country to indicate any unusual movements?

Sir S. Cripps

Arrangements exist by which the Government of South Africa prevents any unusual movements.

Mr. Osborne

May I ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what he means by "considerable," and could he give figures?

Sir S. Cripps

Something that is worthy of consideration.
