HC Deb 15 December 1948 vol 459 cc1209-11
48. Brigadier Medlicott

asked the Minister of Defence whether he will give an assurance that jet propelled fighter aircraft will not be supplied to any other

as they are now treated. I believe they are paid equal rates.

Mr. Mellish

Is my right hon. Friend aware that people serving in the Forces are grateful for the substantial increases of pay given by the Labour Government, which are much greater than ever given by any Tory Government?

Following is the statement:

countries until sufficient numbers of such aircraft, both first line and reserve, are available for the defence of this country in any foreseeable contingency.

Mr. Alexander

While the bulk of our production of jet fighters is being used to equip our own Air Forces and those of our Allies under the Brussels Treaty, His Majesty's Government do not regard it as desirable, in existing circumstances, to prohibit other exports entirely.

Air-Commodore Harvey

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the latest type of jet turbine engines are being manufactured in the Hispano factory in France, and is he satisfied that proper security measures are being taken to ensure that our secrets are not given away?

Mr. Alexander

We are doing our very best to have the highest security arrangements possible.
