HC Deb 13 December 1948 vol 459 cc815-6
15. Mr. Bowden

asked the Minister of Food when cheaper priced sweets will be de-rationed; and what priced sweets and chocolates will continue to be rationed.

25. Mr. Gammans

asked the Minister of Food if he is yet in a position to make a further statement regarding the abolition of sweet rationing.

Mr. Strachey

I hope to make a statement soon after the Recess about the date and other particulars of the de-rationing of the cheaper types of sweets which I announced on 1st November last.

Mr. Bowden

Will my right hon. Friend bear in mind that 2s. 4d. 1b. would release very many more varieties than 2s. lb.?

Mr. Strachey

I agree with my hon. Friend.

Mr. Gammans

Why cannot the right hon. Gentleman make the announcement before Christmas so that the children can have some sweets for Christmas?

Mr. Strachey

As an alternative to that, we increased the sweet ration for Christmas.

Mrs. Jean Mann

Will the Minister take steps to ensure that when these sweets are derationed they will not go up in price or below the counter?

Mr. Strachey

There is no suggestion of abandoning price control.
