HC Deb 13 December 1948 vol 459 cc808-9
3. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Minister of Food whether he is aware of the present conditions in the slaughterhouse at Newtown, Montgomery; and what steps are being taken to improve conditions at that place.

Mr. Strachey

Proposals for the improvement of this slaughterhouse are being considered by the Ministry of Works. These would include a new entrance to the premises so that animals on arrival may be taken direct to lairage pens without having to pass through a yard in which hides, skins and other by-products await collection.

Mr. Freeman

Can my right hon. Friend say whether the remainder of the slaughterhouse will also be improved, in view of the fact that one of the walls is adjacent to a cottage and the blood from the slaughterhouse seeps through to the cottage and causes great inconvenience to the tenants in that cottage?

Mr. Strachey

Yes, I have no doubt that the Ministry of Works have that in mind.
