HC Deb 13 December 1948 vol 459 cc814-5
12. Air-Commodore Harvey

asked the Minister of Food if he is aware that pork is unobtainable by housewives; and if he will take steps to ensure that reasonable supplies of pork are available on the meat ration, if possible in time for Christmas.

Mr. Strachey

I should be glad to do what the hon. and gallant Member suggests if I had the pork. Unfortunately, there is not enough.

Air-Commodore Harvey

Will the right hon. Gentleman say how he expects the housewife to feed her family for four days over the Christmas holidays on the present meagre ration? Will he do something to stop the black market and to see that people get better rations?

Mr. J. Langford-Holt

While accepting the statement that there is not enough pork, will the right hon. Gentleman explain why it is that there was enough pork to enable pork fritters to be on the menu of the House of Commons dining room both last week and today?

Mr. Strachey

That is a question for the Kitchen Committee.
