HC Deb 13 December 1948 vol 459 c824
34. Mr. Thomas Reid

asked the Minister of Transport how many people have been, respectively, killed and injured in Britain in road accidents since 1910.

Mr. Callaghan

Between 1st January, 1926, and 31st October, 1948, 148,542 persons were killed in road accidents. Excluding the years 1939 to 1941, when injuries were not recorded, 3,509,113 persons were injured. I am sorry that figures for the years before 1926 are not available.

Mr. Reid

Will my hon. Friend give wider publicity to these figures, in the hope that those who misuse the roads by their carelessness, will put a stop to this appalling calamity?

Mr. Callaghan

Since the war, there has been a widespread public campaign, and I am glad to say that the number of deaths and casualties is slowly decreasing.
