HC Deb 01 December 1948 vol 458 cc1990-1
21. Dr. Segal

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many West African nurses and dispensers are expected to complete their training during each of the next three years; and what additional training facilities will be provided during that period.

Mr. Creech Jones

The number of West African nurses expected to complete their training in the United Kingdom during the next three years is: 1949, 4; 1950, 37; 1951, 83. Dispensers are normally trained in the Colony. There are ample facilities in the United Kingdom for training suitable candidates in nursing.

Dr. Segal

Does my right hon. Friend really feel that these figures are commensurate with the appalling needs of the situation, and should not these facilities be further extended?

Mr. Creech Jones

It is not due to the local Government that more nurses are not there. It is a very ample scheme, and we are prepared to receive as many applicants as are prepared to apply.
