HC Deb 22 April 1948 vol 449 cc2005-6
60. Mr. Keeling

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what total amount was lent to the Treasury during the war free of interest; what proportion is still in hand; and whether any sum so lent is now returnable on application.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

The total amount of loans free of interest to 31st March, 1948, was £74 million, of which£½million have been lent since the end of the war. £15½ million are now outstanding, Any holder of an interest-free loan Certificate can obtain repayment if he makes application to the Bank of England.

Mr. Keeling

As many of these public benefactors are now subject to the tax which the Chancellor admits can only be paid out of capital, would the right hon. Gentleman consider sending a copy of his reply to each of those who still have money in the hands of the Treasury?

Mr. Glenvil Hall

Those who have lent this money in this patriotic way are well aware of the ways in which they can ask for it to be returned. This is not the first time that this Question has been put on the Order Paper.

Mr. Keeling

If I send the hon. Gentleman evidence that they are not aware will he reconsider the matter?

Mr. Glenvil Hall

Certainly.
