HC Deb 21 April 1948 vol 449 c1791
14. Mr. William Teeling

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether His Majesty's Government has recognised the new Government of Siam; and whether the new Prime Minister has made any gesture to show that he is now friendly to this country.

Mr. Bevin

The new Siamese Government has still to be confirmed in office by the Siamese Assembly, and His Majesty's Government are awaiting information on this point. As regards the second part of the Question, I understand that the new Prime Minister has given assurances to the Press that his Government will scrupulously respect all agreements and other commitments with foreign powers entered into by previous Governments.

Mr. Teeling

In view of the vital importance of the position of Siam in South-Eastern Asia, and of the Communist propaganda there, will the Government make every effort to speed up a decision on recognition one way or the other?

Mr. Bevin

We are continuously in touch with the whole of this problem, but I have to have regard to some antecedents as well as possible futures.
