HC Deb 15 April 1948 vol 449 c1167
56. Commander Noble

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he will reconsider the case of a traveller who, just before leaving Jamaica, was refunded £8 paid as a deposit for a hired car, and had this sum confiscated on arrival in this country.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

It has already been decided to restore the seizure in this case. The applicant's solicitors were informed of this on 9th April.

Commander Noble

Is the Minister aware that the refund was made in Jamaican notes, that at the request of the Jamaican authorities it was changed into British notes, and on arrival in this country the traveller was told that it would have been all right if he had brought Jamaican notes?

Mr. Glenvil Hall

As soon as it was discovered that the Jamaican authorities had insisted on changing this money into British notes, we restored it.
