HC Deb 13 April 1948 vol 449 c787
38. Colonel Crosthwaite-Eyre

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what counterclaims were submitted to the Royal Netherlands Government by His Majesty's Government for services rendered in liberating Holland, before they agreed to the payment of £5 million to Holland for the use of Dutch shipping during the war.

Sir S. Cripps

These counterclaims are covered by an agreement dated 11th March, 1948, and printed as Cmd. 7358, of which I am sending a copy to the hon. and gallant Member.

Colonel Crosthwaite-Eyre

As anyone who looks at that Paper will see that the counterclaims bear no relation to the obligations we assumed, would not the Chancellor admit that the famous statement of Canning should be altered to read: In matters of claims the fault of Cripps Is giving too freely, and asking for nix"?

Sir S. Cripps

No, Sir.
