§ 26. Mr. Gallacherasked the Secretary of State for War what amount of petrol was used for the Forces in Greece from January to August, 1947; how this rate of consumption compares with that in other commands; and whether he is satisfied that no petrol is being wasted on unauthorised journeys.
§ Mr. ShinwellApproximately 10,000 tons. The per capita petrol consumption in Greece is the lowest in all Commands abroad except Gibraltar. I have no reason to suppose that petrol is being wasted in Greece. A strict system of petrol accounting is employed there as elsewhere.
§ Mr. GallacherAs my highly esteemed right hon. Friend—[Laughter]. Members opposite may laugh but I speak for the workers and not for the Tories—is aware, I have received several communications on this question and will he look into the matter again?
§ Mr. ShinwellCertainly, if my hon. Friend will let me have the details.
