HC Deb 25 November 1947 vol 444 cc1782-3
38. Mr. Dumpleton

asked the Secretary of State for War what regulations have been issued regarding the personal property which prisoners of war are permitted to take with them on repatriation; what articles are prohibited, and why.

Mr. Shinwell

Prisoners are allowed to take with them on repatriation all personal property which they have legitimately acquired, except articles of which the export is prohibited under Board of Trade regulations. They may also take up to 15 lb. weight of foodstuffs and 300 cigarettes or the equivalent in tobacco.

Mr. Dumpleton

Is my right hon. Friend aware that there seems to be some ambiguity about this, because different commandants are interpreting these in different ways, some prohibiting prisoners of war from taking home with them such things as shaving soap, candles, and cotton thread which they have purchased out of their small moneys?

Mr. Shinwell

No doubt that question will be taken note of in my Department.
