HC Deb 25 November 1947 vol 444 cc1773-4
26. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what has been the output of the building workers employed by direct labour by the Ayrshire County Council on the housing scheme at Kilmaurs; and how it compares with that of workers employed by private contractors.

Mr. Woodburn

I am informed by the County Council that bricklayers employed under direct labour on the Kilmaurs Scheme have laid an average of 630 bricks a day, and that the output of bricklayers on contractors' schemes in the county is estimated to range from 350 to 600 bricks a day.

Mr. Hughes

In view of this striking proof of the success of direct labour, will the right hon. Gentleman circulate these figures to the other authorities with the object of increasing output throughout Scotland?

Mr. Woodburn

We are very pleased to see these figures, and we hope that the example will be copied in all districts.
