HC Deb 25 November 1947 vol 444 cc1786-7
46. Sir W. Smithers

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he has considered the letter sent to him concerning retrospective taxation in Death Duties, and the hardship imposed on those who rely on incomes from small legacies; and if he will make a statement.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir Stafford Cripps)

This matter was debated at the Report stage of the Finance Bill last summer, and I would refer the hon. Member to what was said on that occasion.

Sir W. Smithers

Does not the right hon. and learned Gentleman realise now that he is in the office of Chancellor that we hope for better things? Does he not also realise that many people saved and were thrifty to provide for their old age, but now, owing to unforeseen legislation, they are reduced to very restricted circumstances, and it is very hard on them?

Sir S. Cripps

If the hon. Member will read the report, which I mentioned, he will appreciate the argument.
