HC Deb 25 November 1947 vol 444 c1792
58. Mr. Ronald Chamberlain

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the need for the curtailment of new capital expenditure, he will take steps to utilise the financial resources of building societies in connection with the Government's housing programme.

Sir S. Cripps

No, Sir. New capital expenditure is being curtailed by other means.

Mr. Chamberlain

Is my right hon. and learned Friend aware that there is in fact a tremendous flow of mortgage repayments, which amounted last year to about £140 million, and in general this is not being used to the national advantage?

Sir S. Cripps

It would be very well invested in any of the Government securities.

Sir W. Smithers

Question.
