HC Deb 20 November 1947 vol 444 c1338
58. Sir Waldron Smithcrs

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why the Government have issued a request to the Commonwealth and the Colonies to cut down the import of textiles; and what percentage was suggested of the 1936 figures.

Mr. Marquand

I am not aware of any such specific request having been made.

Sir W. Smithers

What is meant by "specific"? Will the hon. Gentleman explain "specific"? Has no request been made at all?

Mr. Marquand

What I meant by "specific" is that no request of this kind has been made by His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom to any of the Commonwealth Governments.
