HC Deb 17 November 1947 vol 444 c803
51. Mr. Lipson

asked the Minister of Agriculture what steps are being taken to provide shelter for sheep and cattle in order to prevent a recurrence of the losses which took place last winter.

Mr. T. Williams

I have not complete information about the action that farmers are taking to provide better shelter for livestock on their holdings. The planting of shelter belts is included in a number of proposals for improvement schemes under the Hill Farming Act.

Mr. Lipson

As the severe weather has already arrived, is it not necessary that action should be taken? Will the right hon. Gentleman consider the use of unused Army huts which may be made available in certain parts of the country?

Mr. Williams

The hon. Member will appreciate that hill sheep are scattered over a very wide area, and that they will never walk into an Army hut, or any other type of hut, unless driven.
