HC Deb 19 May 1947 vol 437 c1984
9. Mr. Skeffington-Lodge

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, in view of the shortages in Germany and the dismay caused by the export from that country of approximately 6,000,000 metres of cotton material to Afghanistan and the Sudan by the British authorities, he will state the reasons for this action.

Mr. Mayhew

No such exports have been made. My hon. Friend may, however, be referring to the spinning and weaving in the combined British and American zone of 6,000,000 yards of cotton material intended for export to East Africa. The raw cotton for this material is being imported into Germany for processing and re-export.

Mr. Bramall

Will my hon. Friend take steps to see that the people in Germany who are spreading these stories are corrected and that an accurate statement is given wide publicity in the German Press?

Mr. Mayhew

Yes, Sir. I am grateful for questions of this nature which enable me to make corrections.
