HC Deb 15 May 1947 vol 437 c1701
57. Mr. Keeling

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will make a statement about the causes and settlement of the strike at the Billingsgate fish market.

Mr. Ness Edwards

Following a full resumption of work on Friday last, the normal relations between the Corporation and the trade union have been resumed. In the circumstances my right hon. Friend thinks it would not be desirable to make any further statement at present.

Mr. Keeling

Can the Minister say whether the Minister of Labour has any information that the strike was due, either wholly or in part, to the resentment felt by the fish-porters against the market police sergeant's attempt to prevent them from expanding their perquisite of free fish?

Mr. Ness Edwards

Allegations of many sorts are being made. While this matter is the subject of investigation and discussion, I do not think I should be expected to commit myself.
