HC Deb 06 May 1947 vol 437 cc213-4
73. Mr. John E. Haire

asked the President of the Board of Trade what inspections are carried out by his Department to maintain the usual high quality of British goods for export.

Mr. Belcher

None, Sir. We attach great importance to maintaining the high quality of British goods for export, but do not consider that a system of inspection such as my hon. Friend appears to envisage would be practicable.

Mr. Haire

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that many foreign firms who are buyers of our goods have expressed concern at the poor quality of certain British goods that have been delivered?

Mr. Belcher

I have heard it suggested that some poor British goods are being exported, but I am quite satisfied from by own knowledge that the vast majority of the British goods exported are of the very highest quality.
