HC Deb 20 March 1947 vol 435 c588
52. Sir W. Smithers

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, in view of the fact that the target of £520,000,000 in small savings has now been reached, what is the actual cash benefit to the Treasury, taking into account items such as interest, encashment and all other factors.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

The National Savings Committee will publish the figures at the end of this month.

Sir W. Smithers

Is it not a fact that, according to one calculation, the actual cash benefit to the Government is only about million, and why continue this secrecy and deceit by not telling the public what is the real cash value?

Mr. Glenvil Hall

There is no secrecy or deceit. These figures are published periodically. It may interest the hon. Gentleman to know that in the next year—that is, beginning 1st April—it is proposed to publish these figures weekly.

Sir W. Smithers

Some result of my efforts?
