HC Deb 18 March 1947 vol 435 cc188-9
41. Mr. Stokes

asked the Secretary of State for War how many prisoners of war were repatriated to Germany during the month ended 28th February.

Mr. Bellenger

Fifteen thousand, six hundred and twenty-one, Sir.

Mr. Stokes

When does the right hon. Gentleman propose to increase the number to 30,000 per month, which is the rate the Control Commission desire?

Mr. Bellenger

That is another question.

Mr. Driberg

Does the figure quoted include compassionate cases?

Mr. Bellenger

Yes, Sir.

Viscount Hinchingbrooke

While I agree that those prisoners of war wishing to return should be given facilities to go as soon as possible, will the right hon. Gentleman see that he does not hurry back those prisoners who do not want to go?

Mr. Bellenger

That goes far beyond the Question on the Order Paper.
