HC Deb 18 March 1947 vol 435 c167
12. Mr. Frank Byers

asked the Minister of Labour the precise Departments and sub-Departments which have to be consulted and which have to approve the application by a British subject for a labour permit for a foreign worker; and what is the length of time taken for the completion of all these stages in respect of one such application.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour (Mr. Ness Edwards)

The decision rests with my right hon. Friend. In practice, inquiries may have to be made of Departments such as the Board of Trade, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Education, the Foreign Office and the Home Office. Where such inquiries are necessary the time taken for their completion varies, but in the majority of cases it does not exceed two weeks.

Mr. Byers

Is the Parliamentary Secretary correctly informed, because it has been the experience of a considerable number of people that it takes over a month? Will he look into this matter again?

Mr. Ness Edwards

I am prepared to look into it, but this is new machinery at work, and it could not have taken a month.

Mr. Stephen

Are German people allowed to enter this country on application?

Mr. Ness Edwards

No, Sir.
