HC Deb 10 March 1947 vol 434 cc947-8
45. Mr. E. P. Smith

asked the Prime Minister if he is now in a position to announce the names of the members of the Royal Commission appointed to inquire into the Press.

The Prime Minister (Mr. Attlee)

I hope to make a statement before Easter.

Mr. Smith

Would the Prime Minister bear in mind that during the national emergency the eminent persons who are likely to be appointed to this Royal Commission would be better employed in productive capacity?

Mr. W. J. Brown

Can we hope that when the Prime Minister does make his statement on this subject it will include an announcement that this project has been abandoned?

Mr. Haydn Davies

Will the Prime Minister recognise that this enthusiasm for the Royal Commission on the part of the Opposition is something which he should bear in mind in encouraging him to make an early announcement?
