§ 36. Mr. Keelingasked the Minister of Food to what extent his Department's hope of importing Italian cheese is likely to be realised.
§ Dr. SummerskillThe position has not changed since a similar Question was asked by the hon. Member for Wallasey (Mr. Marples) on 23rd May last. Italy is at present a net importer of milk products, but when cheese of a suitable type is available at reasonable prices we shall endeavour to procure it.
§ Mr. KeelingIs the Minister aware that the opinion she offered a fortnight ago, 940 that it is not the function of the Ministry of Food to pander—that was her own word—to the "acquired taste" of people who like Gorgonzola or Bel Paese, has been condemned by the British Press of all parties?
§ Dr. SummerskillGorgonzola is being sold at the Italian frontier for 5s. a lb., and I do not think the people in this country would be willing to pay such a price if it were possible to import it.
§ Mr. Walker-SmithArising out of the first answer of the hon. Lady, could she get here Departmental officials to write "try to get it" instead of "endeavour to procure it," which means just the same?
§ Dr. SummerskillI can assure the hon. Gentleman that we have a representative in Italy waiting for the Italian Government to say when they are prepared to export it.
