HC Deb 10 March 1947 vol 434 cc938-9
33. Mr. Grierson

asked the Minister of Food why matzos are being imported from the U.S.A. whilst restrictions are being placed on home productions.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food (Dr. Edith Summerskill)

An import licence has been granted for only a very small "token" quantity of matzos. This will supplement home supplies which are much below demand but can have no harmful effect on the interests of British manufacturers. Home production will be freed of quantitative restrictions as soon as the necessity to save flour disappears.

Squadron-Leader Sir Gifford Fox

Will the hon. Lady say why the points value of matzos is reduced during the feast of the Passover?

Dr. Summerskill

I think that it is quite obvious. This is of great significance to the Jewish community, and we wanted to help Jewish housewives to get sufficient.
