HC Deb 10 March 1947 vol 434 cc943-4
41. Mr. Shurmer

asked the Minister of Food if he is aware that the big increase in the price of dried eggs is causing concern; and, as no reason has been given for this, if he will inform the House of the reason for the increase of 9d. per packet.

Dr. Summerskill

This commodity has hitherto carried a heavier subsidy than my right hon. Friend, in consultation with the Chancellor of the Exchequer, con- siders to be justified. The increase brings the price approximately into line with the cost. It was explained in a Press notice issued on 1st March that the prices of all egg products were being increased with the object of bringing them into conformity with costs.

Mr. Shurmer

Would the hon. Lady bear in mind that if it is necessary at any time in the future to increase the price of any food commodity she will at the same time give the public the reason why?

Mr. Gammons

Is this the beginning of the knocking off of food subsidies?

Dr. Summerskill.

We are reviewing all prices and when we consider a change is necessary we shall reduce the subsidy.

Sir W. Smithers

Is the real reason for the increase in price the ruinous process of bulk purchases?
