HC Deb 06 March 1947 vol 434 cc646-7
49. Mr. Kenneth Lindsay

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the shortage of manpower, he will cause a review to be made by various Ministries, notably, Education, Labour and the Treasury, so that students' wives taking up work do not jeopardise their husbands' grants and so that deductions of 50 per cent. are not made from students who work in vacations; and, further, will he make known where labour is wanted, so that the expressed desire of several thousand students to contribute to national needs and, incidentally, their own upkeep is not frustrated.

The Prime Minister

I am having this matter re-examined.

Mr. Lindsay

Does my right hon. Friend recollect that there are now more than 30,000 students receiving grants? Is he aware that these petty deductions are causing not only lack of employment, but very great hardship and frustration?
