HC Deb 26 June 1947 vol 439 c663
16. Sir Patrick Hannon

asked the Minister of Health if his attention has been called to the condition of families living in the squatters' camp, Crabmill Lane Estate, Birmingham; if steps are being taken to provide alternative accommodation for these families; and if the hutments on the estate will be demolished.

Mr. Bevan

The Bromsgrove Rural District Council have recently been authorised by my principal housing officer to improve the water supply and sanitation at this camp. In the interest of good local government, I hope also that the council, as the housing authority concerned, will assume full management until alternative accommodation can be found for the occupants. This is not yet available, and it is not at present proposed to demolish the huts.

Sir P. Hannon

While I express gratitude to the Minister, may I ask him if he will give a more urgent push to the council concerned for the removal of these huts?

Mr. Bevan

I am very conscious of the situation there, and have actually asked representatives of the authority to see me.
