§ 6. Mr. Charles Smithasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies by what method representatives of the Fijian people are selected to sit in the Legislative Council; and when it is intended to introduce the method of election.
Mr. Creech JonesThe five Fijian members are selected by the Governor from a panel of names submitted to him by the Great Council of Chiefs. The Legislative Council of Fiji recently voted by a very substantial majority in favour of the continuance of this method of election, and I am satisfied that no change in the system is at present required.
