HC Deb 10 June 1947 vol 438 c872
61. Mr. Osborne

asked the President of the Board of Trade what representations have been made to the U.S. Government against the proposed tariff increase on woollen imports; and' whether he will make a statement on this subject.

Mr. Harold Wilson (Secretary for Over seas Trade)

His Majesty's Government have been following closely the proposal now before the United States Congress for the levy, in certain circumstances, of a fee on imports of wool. It remains to be seen whether it will become law in its present form; but I have seen published statements of members of the U.S. Administration to the effect that the latter is opposed to the enactment of the legislation in its present form as inconsistent with the objects of the International Trade Conference now proceeding at Geneva. We have not made any formal representations to the United States Government on this subject; but they are fully aware, from discussions at the Geneva Conference, of our views and of those of the Dominions.

Mr. Osborne

Will the Parliamentary Secretary make it clear to certain American people that we cannot continue to import from them unless they are prepared to take some of our goods in return, which is a lesson they do not seem to have learnt?
