HC Deb 02 July 1947 vol 439 c1288
4. Sir Robert Young

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty when the naval camps at Rixton-with-Glaze-brook are likely to be vacated; whether they are fully utilised at present; and whether one or other of them can be released in the near future for housing or other necessary purpose.

Mr. W. Edwards

The Admiralty is in possession of two camps in this area. The work of adapting one, to provide 96 flats for Admiralty civil employees at the Risley Storage Depot, is nearly complete. The second camp formed part of H.M.S. "Gosling" until the beginning of last month, and its conversion into married quarters for naval personnel is now under consideration.

Sir R. Young

Can the Civil Lord say why these camps are so far away from naval establishments?

Mr. Edwards

These camps are not far away from naval establishments, though they may be away from dockyards. There is a very large storage dump at Risley, where there are a large number of men employed, and we feel that this accommodation is necessary.
