HC Deb 27 February 1947 vol 433 c2271
39. Commander Noble

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether he is satisfied that every advantage has been taken of using oil instead of coal during the present coal shortage.

Mr. Shinwell

Every possible use is being made of existing oil-burning equipment to save coal consumption, and further efforts are being made to increase the amount of such equipment as quickly as possible.

Commander Noble

Is not the B.B.C. burning coal when it might be burning oil?

Mr. Shinwell

I should like to see that question on the Order Paper.

Commander Noble

Can the right hon. Gentleman say if it is left to the concern itself, if it has the equipment, whether it uses oil or coal?

Mr. Shinwell

We have no power to compel fuel consumers to differentiate, but we encourage the use of fuel oil, provided we can secure the necessary plant and equipment.
