HC Deb 27 February 1947 vol 433 c2281
65. Mr. Driberg

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury how soon lie proposes to take the further necessary steps to provide late-night transport home for honourable Members and the staff of the House.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

As soon as practicable after the necessary Supplementary Estimate is approved by this House.

Mr. Driberg

Can my right hon. Friend say why there has been so much delay following the Debate which took place some time ago, and is he aware of the considerable inconvenience and hardship that have been caused in recent weeks to the staff as well as to hon. Members?

Mr. Glenvil Hall

I am, of course, aware that there has been delay and that it has caused inconvenience, but there are reasons. Negotiations have had to take place between the various parties in this House, but I am glad to say that I think that we have now arrived at a conclusion satisfactory to all concerned, and as soon as the Supplementary Estimate has been presented we shall be able to put the service into operation.

Lieut.-Commander Braithwaite

Has not this problem now become merged in the general one of providing transport for night shift workers in all industries?

Mr. Walkden

Does the right hon. Gentleman really mean—as he appeared to say—that there has been general agreement reached and that we are all to be levied, including those who will not receive any benefit from this scheme?

Mr. Glenvil Hall

I do not think I used the word "levied."

Mr. Bowles

May I ask my right hon. Friend When the Estimate is to be presented?

Mr. Glenvil Hall

It has been printed already and we hope that it may be presented tomorrow, although I am told that may not be possible, in which case it will certainly be presented next week.
