§ 44. Mr. S. 0. Daviesasked the Minister of Fuel and Power how many shifts were lost during 1946 because of the lack or failure of transport to convey miners between their homes and the collieries.
§ Mr. ShinwellLosses specifically recorded as attributable to failure of transport facilities to convey miners to the collieries during 1946 amounted to only 34,000 manshifts, but this number is likely to exclude cases where only a few men were affected at any one time.
§ 66. Mr. Murrayasked the Minister of Fuel and Power the number of shifts lost by miners, excluding those off work through accident or sickness, for the months of January, 1946, and January, 1947.
§ Mr. ShinwellThe only figures I can give my hon. Friend are those for the lost shifts which have been classified by colliery managers as voluntary absenteeism. The total in January, 1946, (four weeks) was 1,502,000 and the corresponding figure for January, 1947, was 1,481,000.
§ Mr. MurrayIs the Minister aware that those figures should give great comfort to the hon. Member for the Hallam Division of Sheffield (Mr. Jennings) in view of his speech yesterday?
